On a recent visit to the tiny beach house on wheels by some of the grands, we decided to sit on the shore and swim in the Gulf for the afternoon. Jasmin, was unsure of what was in the water. It took a little prodding to get her to even think about going in. Her primary concern was sharks. I assured her the water was much too shallow for sharks. I was thinking a 15 foot Great White at the moment.
I am, of course, the worst grandmother in the world as I post the above picture. But in the moment, I was sure enough that a 15 foot shark wasn't in the water to tell her I would swim with her and we would be safe. We had a lovely afternoon of sun, sand and surf. All was glorious until the fisher woman showed up!
There are sand bars here at Crystal Beach and the fisher woman waded out to the second sand bar which was about 30 foot past us. So far so good. We watched as she caught several fish and added to them to her bucket on her side. I even jokingly remarked that if a shark was out there, he would eat her first because she had a chum bucket attached to her hip. Duh duh, duh duh (think the score of jaws when you read those words).
Her next fish was rather large and she waded into shore to remove it from the hook. The tide was coming in and the waves were slightly larger, rougher and moving quickly. It was evident that the fisher woman had caught a 16-24 inch shark. Jasmin widened her beautiful brown eyes and headed to shore. Her mother was sitting in a chair and Jasmin quickly took up residence beside her.
What happened next will go down in Ya-Ya, mom/daughter and granddaughter history. The fisher woman released the shark into about 4 inches of water and we watched in flail about trying to get to deeper water. A very large wave pushed water onto shore up past where Jasmin was standing and her mom was sitting in a chair. The shark shot into the water and was gone. Or so we thought.
As the wave receded, we all three saw the shark at the same time. I looked toward the shore, Jasmin looked down and Terri looked sideways. I have never seen a girl jumped so high and back at the same time. The damn shark was flopping around trying to catch the wave again right at Jasmins' feet! We all dissolved into laughter at the irony of the situation. I will never live this down and getting the kid into the water at Cabo is probably not going to happen!
Truth be told, I ain't so sure I'm going in either! I love you Jasmin!
