I do not worry about teachable moments with my grandchildren.
"Ya-Ya can I eat that 3 pound bar of chocolate?"
"Of course, how many would you like?"
I made this decision years ago. I love 'em up, sugar 'em up and send them home. That my friends, IS my job as a grandparent. I wouldn't let them walk through fire or do something seriously awful but for the most part I am a unteaching grandparent. I am unabashed in the pride I take in this decision.
We went for a walk this morning on the beach and I realized there were indeed many teaching moments happening. Funny thing is, it is me who is the student.
As parents, grandparents, or just old boring adults we often seem so ready to pounce to correct the incorrect language, the lax table manners, or just the crazy things they say. We feel a need to correct, instruct, or perfect an already magically perfect little person.
As the geriatric generation why do we feel the need to "teach"? It is our time to be who we want, what we want so why would we choose imparting wisdom over just having fun? Not me baby, I will choose childish every time.
Today I was shown a "doorbell" shell. It was an oyster shell with a perfect "doorbell" shape. It had the perfect indentation for a little finger to press and ring the "doorbell." What would it sound like? Why, a Seagull of course!

They did have questions, which I answered as well as I could. The beach life is also fairly new to me so every day is still a discovery. In short, I certainly don't have all the answers.
So I will happily remain the student in this short second chance I have to be with children who are not quite mine.I will revel in the artwork they created with the shells we collected. I will laugh when thinking of the crazy things they say and do with childish abandon. I will happily revert from my age to the age they are when I am with them (and probably when I am not). I will thank God everyday for teachable moments, for my children, and the children they share with me. Three pound bars of chocolate are pretty awesome also.
